Do you have a dream closet with loads of shelving and more than enough storage space? No? Well, neither do we! Of course, in an ideal world, our homes would have unlimited closet space, but the reality is they don’t, and we must do the best with what we have. One simple solution to help in this scenario is renting a self storage unit for your seasonal clothing. A self storage unit can create more closet space and house the items you don’t wear every day.
Here are five easy tips to ensure your clothing is in the same condition as you left it when you go to pick it up!
1. Wash Your Clothes
Wash and dry your clothes as you normally would, even if they look clean. Any dirt or debris on your clothes now can set in and permanently stain them if not removed before storage. Clothes that aren’t clean will also attract unwanted pests.
So even if they appear clean, it’s best to run them through the wash. Also, be sure clothes are completely dry before packing and putting them into storage. Clothing that is even slightly damp can lead to mold or mildew growth when packed away.
2. Choose Appropriate Storage Containers
Storage experts agree that the best way to store clothes is in plastic storage containers made of polypropylene. Clean, clear plastic storage bins not only let you see what’s inside, but they are also less likely to attract insects and bugs. Cardboard boxes may be used for temporary storage, but they easily invite bugs in, so they are not recommended for long term storage.
For items that aren’t easily folded, consider large wardrobe boxes to allow for hanging pieces.
3. Find Climate Controlled Storage
If you want your clothes to remain in good condition throughout their time in storage, it is highly recommended that you seek out climate controlled storage. Fluctuations in temperature and humidity can be damaging to certain fabrics and expensive items like fur and leather.
4. Protect Your Items
Years ago people would protect their stored clothing with mothballs. However, they have a very strong odor and can be dangerous to kids and pets. It’s best to pack your items with natural cedar blocks or herbal repellents, such as lavender, to keep critters and bugs away.
It is also important to check on your items periodically by visiting your storage unit. If there is a problem, it is best to catch it early and address the situation.
5. Label Before Storing
Lastly, label all storage containers and boxes used in detail. For example, by season, person and/or size. This will allow you to easily find what you’re looking for when you visit your storage unit.
